How do I watch with subtitles?
We recognize the importance of closed captions and appreciate your interest in this feature. We currently offer subtitles for most titles on VidAngel and are continually adding them to more movies and TV shows.
Please note: We do not yet offer official closed captions, which include additional audio cues and descriptions beyond dialogue. We're evaluating ways to bring this accessibility feature to VidAngel in the future.
Filters and subtitles
Unlike our main filters, we don't have humans creating the filters for subtitles (view Who creates the filters for VidAngel? to learn more), so filter accuracy is limited. To be clear, your audio filters will still mute as expected, but those edits may not show in the subtitles. If that's a dealbreaker, we recommend watching without subtitles for now—but if that's not realistic for you, know that we're working to close that gap over time.
How to turn on & customize subtitles
Once you turn subtitles on, they'll stick around on that profile and device until you flip them off—except on Roku, where it's all or nothing.
Turning subtitles on looks a little different depending on where you're watching. On the website, you're the boss—you can customize exactly how they look, right down to the font. Everywhere else, your subtitles just borrow the style you've already set up in that device's accessibility settings. Here's how to turn on and customize subtitles on all devices:
WEBSITE
To turn subtitles on:
- Click the Subtitles icon (next to the gear) in the bottom-right corner of the movie player.
-
Select English.
NOTE: If you have questions about watching in a different language or using foreign subtitles go HERE.
If you'd like to customize the look of the subtitles, click the Settings icon (the gear), then click Subtitle Style.
From here, you can adjust:
- Font—choose from styles like Default, Serif, Sans Serif, Casual, and more
- Text color, opacity, and size
- Background color and opacity
- Window color
- Edge style (None, Raised, Depressed, or Uniform) and drop shadow
A live preview ("The quick brown fox") shows your changes as you make them, so you can find the combo that works best for you!
PHONE or TABLET
- Tap the screen to bring up the player controls.
- Tap the Subtitle icon in the top right corner. It turns blue when subtitles are turned on.
| WARNING: Subtitles will not work when casting from the mobile app to a Samsung TV or when using AirPlay. They should work when Chromecasting. |

Subtitles not showing
First, check if you're casting to a Samsung TV or using AirPlay—subtitles don't work with either of those right now.
If that's not it, the title you're watching probably just hasn't gotten the subtitle treatment yet. Our subtitles are currently a beta feature we're building out manually across our entire library, and we haven't gotten to every title yet. If there's a show you've got your heart set on watching with subtitles, let us know and we'll bump it up the list.
Are subtitles available?
Not every title has subtitles yet—but you don't have to hit play just to find out! Just look for the subtitle icon on the movie's info page. See it? Subtitles are ready to go. No icon? Not yet, but we're always adding more!
