Ad-supported streaming services (also known as AVOD: Advertising-based Video on Demand) are becoming increasingly popular. These services typically offer either a reduced charge or no charge to view content interrupted by commercials.
Here are answers to common questions about how advertisements work with VidAngel filters.
- Which ad-supported streaming service plans link to VidAngel?
- Can I skip the ads?
- Can I filter content in the ads?
- What if I think an ad is Inappropriate?
- Why can't ad-based services play on Roku?
- Why can't ad-based services play with AirPlay?

You can't skip the ads
Advertisements will still be shown in VidAngel and cannot be skipped or filtered out. We respect the streaming services that provide content that can be filtered with VidAngel. Services that provide ad-supported movies and TV have business models that rely upon advertising revenue to make possible the free or discounted content. The business model is that advertisers pay, which subsidizes the consumer experience. Further, VidAngel provides all the usage data which allows streaming services to get full credit for all ads served.
This means if you try to fast-forward or leave and then come back to a show, you will be shown all the previous ads at once.
You can't Filter content in the ads
There are no filter options for advertisements. VidAngel’s technology works with these services to include all ads and show them the same as when they are served to customers without VidAngel.
An advertisement is inappropriate
We know you use VidAngel because there are some things you don't want to see or hear, however, VidAngel’s technology works with these services to include all ads the same as when they are served to customers without VidAngel.
VidAngel has no say in the ads that are shown. If you are not wanting to see certain kinds of ads, you may contact Amazon support or Peacock support, to see if you can manage your ad preferences. You can see how to share ad feedback with Netflix here: Report ad issues or share feedback.
You can also choose to upgrade your streaming service plan(s) to avoid ads altogether.
Can't watch ads on Roku
Roku has rules for streaming services with commercials that we can’t fulfill as an add-on service. Because of this, content from these service plans will not play on the VidAngel Roku app:
- Netflix Standard with Ads
- Prime with Ads
- Peacock Premium
- Amazon Paramount+ Essential
- AMC+ with ads
What can you do?
If you upgrade your subscriptions to ad-free versions (e.g., Netflix Standard or Premium, Peacock Premium Plus, Prime ad-free, Paramount+/AMC+ ad-free), or if you rent/buy on Amazon video, you should be able to watch on the Roku app!
You can go here for more details: Roku Error: You need to upgrade to ad-free

Can't watch ads using AirPlay or Chromecast
We are still in the process of building the ability to cast with advertisements. We cannot currently Chromecast ad-based content or Airplay ad-based content, and will continue to improve our casting functionality. This means content from Prime with Ads, Amazon Paramount+ Essential, AMC+ with ads, Netflix Standard with ads, and Peacock Premium will not work with AirPlay or Chromecast.
What can you do?
If you upgrade your subscriptions to ad-free versions (e.g., Netflix Standard or Premium, Peacock Premium Plus, Prime ad-free), or if you rent/buy on Amazon video, you should be able to watch with AirPlay or Chromecast! If you upgrade Amazon Paramount+/AMC+ to ad-free, you should be able to AirPlay or Chromecast *some content.
* Please note that even if you upgrade to Amazon Paramount+ Premium and Amazon AMC+ ad-free, all Paramount+ Originals and many AMC+ shows, contain pre-roll ads for their own content. If it contains a pre-roll ad, this means it cannot be AirPlayed or Chromecasted! |
